OK, OK. I know what you’re thinking. Why is a website geared towards girls/women talking about God given masculinity? Let alone recommending books on the topic?? Let me explain :).
From a young age, I have always been interested in relationships in general and what makes them “tick.” Over the years, I have read hundreds of books and articles on relationships, God’s design for females/males, marriage, dating, etc.
Over the last seven years or so, I began to see an “assault” on God defined masculinity.
The Attack on God Defined Masculinity
You don’t have to read much of the Bible to know that God has defined a specific role for men. They are to be the spiritual heads of their homes, respected, work hard to provide for their families, and love their wives as Christ loved the church. This is no small calling.
Unfortunately, if you look almost anywhere in our modern American culture, especially how husbands are represented in TV shows, their manhood is mocked and demeaned. They should be “more sensitive” and “in touch with their feelings.”
After realizing this alarming trend, I began reading and talking with guys about books that inspired them to be better men. The only way a man will truly thrive is to become all that God has designed him to be and not take a “back seat” in their God given masculinity.
Therefore, I wanted to share the following books that I have read and that come highly recommended by trusted males in my life. I know this site is geared towards girls, but I love helping ANY teenager.
How to Be a Man: Pursuing Christ Centered Masculinity
How To Be A Man: Pursuing Christ-centered Masculinity [Student Edition]
There are two options for this book: a student version and an adult version. These devotionals are a 40-days designed to challenge teenage guys and men to a more passionate pursuit of growing in to the man God is calling them to be.
I have met both of the authors of this book. They are great and so is the devotional.
Here’s a video with the authors. Watch to learn more!

Do Hard Things: A Teenage Rebellion Against Low Expectations
This book is more about living with purpose in your teenage years. The book is written for both genders, but it is written by twin brothers Ales and Brett Harris. Teenage guys will greatly relate to their “voice” and the challenges they propose to live their teenage years with God given purpose. I wish every teenager on the planet would read it.
Here is a snippet of the description: “Do Hard Things is the Harris twins’ revolutionary message in its purest and most compelling form, giving readers a tangible glimpse of what is possible for teens who actively resist cultural lies that limit their potential.
Combating the idea of adolescence as a vacation from responsibility, the authors weave together biblical insights, history, and modern examples to redefine the teen years as the launching pad of life. Then they map out five powerful ways teens can respond for personal and social change. Do Hard Things is packed with humorous personal anecdotes, practical examples, and stories of real-life “rebelutionaries” in action.

They also have a website and blog that you can check out here.
In Closing
I hope that you will pick one of these up for a teen guy in your life, or even read them yourselves. Knowing God’s purpose for masculinity can make you appreciate men and the roles in which they are to lead and serve. It’s not an easy task.
Are there any books you’ve read you think should be on the list?
Until next time!
