Girls in my youth group ask me frequently, “What characteristics should I look for in a Christian guy?”
When trying to find a simple way to explain good characteristics to look for in a teenage guy, Psalm 15 always comes to mind. It is a short chapter and is packed with simple and straightforward characteristics.
We will break down each characteristic and there’s a list at the bottom. Here we go!
10 Qualities of a Christian Teenage Guy
Psalm 15
15 Lord, who may abide in Your tabernacle?
Who may dwell in Your holy hill?
2 He who walks uprightly,
And works righteousness,
And speaks the truth in his heart;
3 He who does not backbite with his tongue,
Nor does evil to his neighbor,
Nor does he take up a reproach against his friend;
4 In whose eyes a vile person is despised,
But he honors those who fear the Lord;
He who swears to his own hurt and does not change;
5 He who does not put out his money at usury,
Nor does he take a bribe against the innocent.
He who does these things shall never be moved.
For this post, we’ll break down verses 2-5 into separate sections. So what attributes should you look for in a Christian guy?
Verse 2
- Walks uprightly. Works righteousness. Speaks truth.
“Walks uprightly” means to have integrity. Integrity means being honest, fair, and adheres to strong moral principles.
“Works righteousness” means his actions are right and morally good. A person needs to be doing this by God’s standard, not the world’s.
“Speaks truth” He speaks truth not only when it’s convenient, but when it could cost him something as well.
Verse 3
- Doesn’t backbite with his tongue. Doesn’t do evil. Doesn’t reproach.
“Doesn’t backbite” means he doesn’t say hurtful things to someone who is supposed to be his friend. If they treat a friend that way, how do you think he will treat you?
“Doesn’t do evil to his neighbor” is along the same lines; he’s nice to those in his life be it friend or neighbor.
“Take up reproach against his friend.” Reproach means blaming or disapproval. This means he doesn’t go around blaming his friends for his problems or make them feel like he is better than they are. Again, if he does it to “friends”, what do you think he will do to you?
Verse 4
- Despises evil. Honors those who fear God. Keeps a promise even when it hurts.
“Despises evil” He does not participate in activities that will lessen his relationship with God, nor does he condone others who participate in evil behavior.
“Honors those who fear God” He surrounds himself with people that respect and honor God. His role models and influences are Godly people.
“Keeps a promise” He does this even when it costs him something. He may have made plans with family, but something more interesting with friends comes up. A good man will keep the promises he’s already made.
Verse 5
- This needs a little more explanation…
“He who does not put out his money at usury” This literally means that he does not give money to the poor and charge a lot of interest. However, since most teenagers aren’t rolling in the dough, this exact meaning may not be applicable; however, a larger principle is. He should give freely if he can without it having to have a payoff or benefit for him.
“Doesn’t take a bribe against the innocent” This all comes back to telling the truth and being morally upstanding. If someone is bribing you, they are trying to give you something of value in exchange for an action, and most of the time those actions are hurtful to someone. By not taking “bribes” they show respect for themselves and others.
“He who does these things shall never be moved” The chapter ends with this. If he is grounded in God and his moral principles, surrounds himself with good people, and is nice to others, it is hard to be swayed by sin and evil.
Let’s Recap
- Walks uprightly
- Works righteousness
- Speaks truth
- Doesn’t say hurtful things
- Stays away from evil
- Doesn’t blame others
- Despises evil
- Honors those who fear God
- Keeps a promise even when it hurts
- Doesn’t take advantage
These are broad characteristics to notice in someone you want to date. They are also qualities to have yourself. You attract what you are, so if you want to date a person like this, you also have to be a person like this and don’t settle for less.
