Consider the difference between the following scenarios:
- You disobeyed your parents, or betray a friend, and you desperately wanted to confess it because you didn’t want your relationships to suffer.
- You hurt a friend or parent, feel terrible about it, and try to deal with your guilt by distancing yourself from them.
In scenario one, the person feel sorry for what he/she has done and wants to make it right. In scenario two, the person feels guilty as well, but attempts to block out the people hurt.
