Have you been looking for different items, such as books or activities to supplement the Bible when teaching your children about the true meaning of Christmas and/or Advent? Then, this post is for you!
Over the last few years, I have bought several items to fulfill this purpose, some were really helpful, but some were not. So, in today’s post I wanted to share five resources I’ve found to help teach young children (ages 3-7) the basics.
The Special Wreath
The Special Wreath: An Explanation of the Advent Wreath for Small Children is a book I wrote that simply explains the parts of the Advent Wreath for children and reiterates that Jesus is the true focus of Christmas. It has a rhyming flow which my kids really enjoy. Click here or the picture below to learn more!
The Beginner’s Bible: A Christmas Celebration Sticker and Activity Book
My kids sooooooooooooooooo enjoyed doing this book last year that I ended up getting one for Easter as well, and will buy another one for Chiristmas this year. It has stickers that go on each page and has multiple activities to do in the book that tell the “Christmas story”. You could use this for kids from ages 2+; it’s great!
You can get the book on Amazon by clicking here or the image below. Christianbook.com sometimes has it cheaper here.
The First Christmas Night
I found the book The First Christmas Night at a local bookstore and was stunned at how BEAUTIFUL the illustrations were. The text is set to the same pattern as “The Night Before Christmas” poem, but it tells about Jesus’ birth instead. Seriously, even if you don’t end up buying it, click the link and do a “look inside”…it’s beautiful!! (The internet won’t do it justice, but the detail is amazing when you see it in person).
Saint Nicholas: The Real Story of the Christmas Legend
Wherever you fall in letting you children believe in Santa Claus, it is important to tell your children who he is modeled after and the Christian roots he has. I bought this book last year and it does a good job without being too overwhelming.

Fisher-Price Little People Nativity
This nativity set is so cute and perfect for small children. It’s easy to grab and can be used for years to discuss what Christmas is really all about! Click here or the graphic below to see more!
….and a *bonus* for adults!
If you’re looking for a unique devotional to do this year for Christmas, let me suggest this one! Last year, after a fruitless search for a simple devotional that would give the account of Christ’s birth in chronological order starting in the Old Testament, I decided to study, read, and write one!
For Unto Us: A 15 day devotional tracing Christ’s birth from prophecy to the manger does just that. It begins with the earliest promise of a Messiah in Genesis and goes in chronological order through the major prophecies in the Old Testament all the way through the visit of the Magi in the New Testament. It’s about 50 pages total and the perfect devotional to keep your focus on the reason for the season!

We hope at least one of these suggestions will help you on your quest to teach a special child in your life about Jesus and the true meaning of Christmas!
Merry Christmas to all!
